I am thankful for y'all & I'm showing it with a sparkling giveaway! November 26, 2010 07:44 181 Comments
So. You doubtless recall that I promised a fantabulous giveaway when I reached 30 followers. Well. Guess what, cupcakes? That moment has arrived. Yes indeed. It has. Yippee skippee. (Well. Actually, it arrived a few days ago. But. I am a procrastinator. You know that. You do.)
So. Rolling of drums. Blowing of horns. Crashing of cymbals. Here's what one lucky winner will get:
1950s pattern Butterick 5679 from The Blue Gardenia (of course!) in either Bust 32 or 34. Winner's choice. Yes. I agree. I am so nice.
Four yards of choose-your-favorite-over-the-top superlative 55" wide Italian wool from Michael's Fabrics in Blue Teal.
Revlon's Fire and Ice lipstick and nail polish. Introduced in 1952, this is truly vintage. And truly film-noir-vixen sexy. (That's Jessica Biel rocking the look today. The inset pic shows Dorian Leigh making it her own — and how — in 1952.)
Am I one fabulous babe or what? I am. I know you agree.
So. The rules: Leave a comment about why you like vintage patterns and whether you have ever sewn one before by Friday, December 3, 11:59 p.m. PST. And. If you are already a follower on Typepad and enter, or if you become a follower and enter, you get one extra entry. (Yes. I know it's a headache to become a follower on Typepad. I do. But perhaps an extra chance at winning this incredible prize will ease the pain.) See, girls and boys, I show my appreciation for those who show me the looooove. I do.
So. There ya go. And I thank all of you who follow. And I thank Sherri and Michael at Michael's for providing the luscious fabric. Absolutely. And if you haven't checked out Michael's, do. You won't regret it. You won't. I've shopped there several times over the years, and I've not been disappointed. Fast shipping, luxe fabric.
(A little hint: When I reach 75 followers, I'm going to do another sensational giveaway.)

I’m new to all this blogging, but I’m loving the sites I’m finding. I would so enjoy this giveaway. I don’t sew much vintage for myself, but my daughters love it.
Sarah on May 20, 2015 12:23
I have sewn from vintage patterns and love them. I’m making my husband a blazer from a vintage 1970s pattern right now.
Miet on May 20, 2015 12:23
I’ve never sewn from vintage patterns – I’m still a beginner. But I do love the silhouettes of those patterns. So feminine!
Laura on May 20, 2015 12:23
I will enter now that you’ve broadened the giveaway, thanks! I’ve made a few vintage patterns and own some others that are on the ‘to-do’ stack. I tend to go for more recent vintage for affordability reasons (60s and 70s). I like it because I think the patterns are generally better drafted and cut closer to the body, which I find more flattering. I am tall and big, though, so I often make a lot of alterations and the convenience of modern multi-size patterns is hard to beat.
Em-made.blogspot.com on May 20, 2015 12:23
Wow, you are nearly up to 75 already! how exciting :) What I love most about vintage patterns is their sexiness… while (usually) showing much less flesh than modern options. and the details are usually devine, so well considered.
I have sewn from a vogue vintage repro pattern.. does that count? It was my first dress and I made it for my wedding… review here: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&ID=56714
Lady J on May 20, 2015 12:23
Wow, what a giveaway! I do love vintage because I think it offers so many classy and feminine looks. I haven’t taken the plunge yet, I’m slightly intimidated. But with all this as a prize I would have no excuse!
Pamela H. on May 20, 2015 12:23
I have been sewing vintage for the past 5-6 years, in that I got a renewed interest in remaking (with a twist) some of my older patterns from the 60s & 70s. Never considered I was “vintage” sewing until I started frequenting blogs! I am most certainly interested in the give-away and the fabric is incredible!
amy on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love the story vintage patterns tell and the promises they hold. Imagine the adventures one could have in this beauty! It would not go unnoticed :)
Cathi M on May 20, 2015 12:23
I like the history of vintage patterns. I like knowing that someone made this before and maybe my Mom or my Grandmother (who both sewed) thought about buying it and wearing the result to a party or a picnic or church.
Cathi M on May 20, 2015 12:23
Doing my part to help you get to 75 followers…I’m a follower now. Ta!

I love to look at the Vintage patterns. I have never sewn with a vintage pattern. I would love to try one and you giveaway is the perfect opportunity to start.
Jessie Roth on May 20, 2015 12:23
I just began sewing this past summer, and every pattern I’ve used has been vintage. I love the elegance of clothing from the 40s and 50s. I have tried 1 modern pattern, which became my only wadder.
Mary on May 20, 2015 12:23
Awesome giveaway! I love vintage patterns because of the details, because they remind me of sewing with my mother, and because they yield vintage-looking clothing! Sadly, I’ve never sewn from one, but please pick me—I need something snazzy to wear for New Year’s Eve!
Debi on May 20, 2015 12:23
I LOVE vintage patterns. I think about them all the time. I love that we can recreate an entire look from a specific time period. I also love that I can make the clothes just for me!!! Hope I win :-)
Eva Girl on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love vintage patterns for their lovely design and flattering details and also because they’re modest, feminine, and make a woman feel pretty!
I’ve sewn a few vintage patterns and love wearing the dresses and skirts that I’ve made. I want to try some blouses next : ) I’m most fond of dresses from the 30’s and 40’s. Thankx for such a great giveaway!
Amanda Woade on May 20, 2015 12:23
I just love vintage styles, they’re so much more feminine and classic than modern clothes. I have sewn quite a few vintage patterns, I even have my own blog about my vintage sewing: http://theyeartwentyfifty.blogspot.com
This pattern (and fabric, and lipstick, jeez!!) is gorgeous! I can only hope I’m the lucky lucky lady who wins!!
Lisbet on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love vintage patterns – I was so happy when I realised that you can gain access through previous times’ beautiful styles that way. That has encouraged me to take up sewing, so I am slowly learning all the techniques. I have tried a couple of vintage patterns.
woolcat on May 20, 2015 12:23
swoon – what a fabulous neckline on that dress. And the wool – yummy! Wonderful giveaway, so nice of you!
I have in fact sewn ONE thing from a vintage pattern – a skirt suit from the mid 1960s. I LOVED it. I wish now I had used a real wool fabric for it. But it looked SO classy and different.
i have a collection of vintage things actually, mainly stuff I got at a big yard sale a few years back, (including the above skirt suit) and am really itching to get sewing some pieces – but my measurements have changed a LOT since having a baby and I have a learning curve – FBA, grading up – to go through before I can really get into the vintage good stuff again.
Erin on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love sewing with vintage patterns for exposure to techniques, details and styles that fit my sensibilities and are not in sync with current fashion. I pretty much only sew with vintage patterns or reprints these days. I’m currently working on a version of Simplicity 4653, a cocktail dress from the 60s, for the holidays!
Amy Gray on May 20, 2015 12:23
I have always wanted to sew Vintage patterns. I love the styles-especially the 40s and 50s. I also love all the detail they put into their sewing directions!
SewDucky! on May 20, 2015 12:23
I get them because they fit better and look better than modern options. I sew them most of the time, compared to modern ones, as well.
Nina Suluh on May 20, 2015 12:23
I’ve been following you through my Google Reader since your first post. I’ve been getting your Blue Gardenia emails since probably 2001? I adore vintage patterns and regularly sew with them. I’ve made uniform skirts for my daughters from a vintage 1970s pleated skirt pattern and I’ll be making my middle child’s FHC dress from a vintage pattern once it wings it’s way from The Blue Gardenia to me. Vintage patterns have been part of my lifestyle since my bridesmaids wore Vintage Vogue reproductions at my wedding in 2000. When I was pregnant with my first child, I wore a 1940s two-piece sunsuit to our Easter frolic. I’m pretty certain I purchased it from you waaaaaaay back in the day. I’m just waiting to be featured on Sewing Spaces… But wait until I have my space cleaned up! ;-) I’m in the throes of holiday sewing and it’s… well… you know how it goes…
Kerry on May 20, 2015 12:23
What a great giveaway. I love vintage patterns because I love vintage clothing, and patterns allow me to make something authentic but perfectly to my own taste!
Miss Persimmon on May 20, 2015 12:23
This is such an incredible giveaway! I love sewing with vintage patterns because they fit – modern patterns have so much ease and are designed for women without their assets both coming and going.
I sew almost exclusively with vintage patterns – I especially love shirtwaist dresses right now. They seem so perfect for winter, done up in a lightweight wool.
Suzy on May 20, 2015 12:23
I have never sewn an original vintage. So far I tend to stick with reprints. I confess I’m a bit too scared but will deffo have a go at some point :)
Angela on May 20, 2015 12:23
I too love vintage patterns. I have yet to stitch one up, but it is on my list of things to do in 2011. This fabric looks scrumptious and I am sure it feels as wonderful as it looks. Fire and Ice. The name says it all. This is a cool, classic shade that I am sure to enjoy so even if I don’t win, I think I’ll go out and buy lipstick and polish.

Thanks for the great giveaway!
I like vintage patterns because the styles of yesteryear are cute and feminine and fun. :)
I have never yet made anything from a real vintage pattern, but I have one vintage pattern in my collection so far, and would love to add to it and try making them!
Miss Emmi on May 20, 2015 12:23
Oooh, what a gorgeous design! I love sewing from vintage patterns because it gives me a chance to wear some beautiful dresses that I probably couldn’t afford on my student budget. The price of real vintage keeps going up and up, so I need to find ways to continue dressing in the style I love without making my wallet cry too badly!
Amazing giveaway, thank you for this chance!
Steph @ Tart Deco on May 20, 2015 12:23
I have sewn with vintage patterns, although I always have to make them bigger to fit me. I find the easiest ones to start with are aprons, then skirts, then on to dresses, etc. I haven’t tackled pants yet, but I hardly ever wear them anyway ;) I find that vintage was made to fit better on the female body and they are just way cuter too!
Thanks for the giveaway!
Steph @ Tart Deco on May 20, 2015 12:23
I was able to follow through typepad by signing in with facebook, so it wasn’t as hard as I thought. I am following you now!
Tasia on May 20, 2015 12:23
What a wonderful giveaway! Teal is my favourite colour and I love the pattern, too!
I’ve made two vintage dresses recently – my favourite one was a poufy full-skirted dress! I love vintage patterns because of the history, the styles and the unique-ness. Vintage patterns from the 1950’s to 1960’s were so flattering on a curvy body, feminine without being revealing, and so delightfully pretty!
Sewsable Crosbie on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love vintage patterns simply because the styles tend to be feminine without being too frilly. I’ve not sewn one yet, but have sewn a reproduction one by Vogue, that wasn’t a success.
Scruffy Badgertime on May 20, 2015 12:23
Hello! What an amazing giveaway! I’m happy to say that I have some simple vintage patterns ( from the 60s mainly), but have only sewn a couple: a man’s 60s beach style shirt out of Liberty fabric (turned out too small for my man, so I have been known to wear it!) I’ve also sewn a 70s full length nightie recently for a pressie. I haven’t yet sewn anything vintage for me properly which is a huge shame because I love the attention to detail, & the new challenges that sewing these bring. eg The man’s shirt had “v” notches in the sleeve hems. I can’t say I have ever sewn anything like the dress above (a bit more complex than my vintage patterns)- the yoke, the neckline plus the sleeve “cuffs”. Isn’t it so wonderful to keep the style from previous decades alive ?
Summerset on May 20, 2015 12:23
Ok, I am certainly a fan of vintage patterns, 50’s especially. I’ve already got the shape, with out having to wear the old school shaping undergarments, so why not? Furthermore, with my coloring I’d look fab in both the teal fabric and the Cherries in the Snow!
Ange on May 20, 2015 12:23
I mostly sew for children, and I am hugely influenced by vintage designs, mostly 40’s and 50’s. But I haven’t sewn from a vintage pattern ……. Yet!
What a great giveaway, Thank you.
Irene Bullock on May 20, 2015 12:23
Can non US residents also participate? If yes, please count me in! I’ve never sewn from a (real) vintage pattern, but I’d love to. And the fabric is fab, I’m so into teal this season.
By the way, when it’s the next Channelin Catherine? I love those posts!

I just finished my first vintage pattern last week and was pleasantly surprised by how straight forward and user friendly the instructions were. I was expecting virtually no explanation for each stage so it was a real pleasure to find out they weren’t scary after all! Love the pattern and fabric, thanks for such a generous giveaway. x

I have never sewn a vintage pattern, but that is my goal for the New Year. I love vintage patterns, because they have such great detailing.
Sarah @ ColorKitten on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love vintage patterns for many reasons – the art and design of the envelopes, the inspiration, the quality of the draftmanship in the actual pattern pieces — but I think mostly because of the sense of possibility they give me, which modern patterns just do not. I do sew from them and have been for a looooong time, I just don’t have the time to do it much. I think my daughter has a lot more vintage than I do at this point! (and she’s 5) Congrats on your followers! (But you do know you have 360 of us subscribers on google reader, right? And surely more every day!)

Your blog keeps eating my comments, this is my third try and I hope it posts this time _
I love the look of vintage patterns, they’re so classy and elegant and I feel like I never have to worry about them looking appropriate for work!
I haven’t sewn one yet, honestly I’m a bit intimidated. But maybe this is the push I need to give it a shot :D
Christy S. on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love the vintage styles, but have never sewn with vintage patterns. Quite frankly they intimidate me, due to what I’ve read about the sizing and fit differences. I guess I should just dive in and see what happens but I would hate to work on such lovely silhouette and have it be a wadder.
Sox on May 20, 2015 12:23
Hello Miss Gardenia,
I have seen patterns I used when I was younger for sale on e-bay as vintage patterns. I thought that was much too funny. I should make them again.
I love the cut and style of the older patterns and they tend to suit my hourglass figure; I guess my body is vintage-styled as well.
I have some vintage patterns in my stash that I want to make but there is so much to do and so little time.
You are a truly generous woman, both with your time (lovely blog) and your gifts.
Thank you.
Betty on May 20, 2015 12:23
I’ve come so close to sewing a vintage pattern but haven’t quite managed it yet. I’ll be brave soon! Can’t just buy them without making…
Some i love because the pictures are fabulous, others because there are unusual details that you just don’t see on modern patterns. Maybe once my Christmas sewing is out of the way i’ll get started on a cool 60’s blouse pattern i have tucked away!
Charlita on May 20, 2015 12:23

I just started to sew vintage patterns. I love the feminine shapes and I really think they flatter the real womans body. I have found some great fabrics in the home decor section that make different and distinct dresses. I was led here by Sewaholic (love her blog)and after reading some of yours signed up to follow you as well. Love to read my fellow sewing fanatics ideas!
Lipstick Jane on May 20, 2015 12:23
I’ve only made one vintage pattern – but can I remember the number & company at work? Nope. It’s a very 50s style dress that my grandmother made for my mother. I’ve made it three times, twice in vintage fabric. It’s a great fit. The only alteration I’ve had to do is lengthen the bodice. (For a short girl, I am really long waisted.) Anywho, it’s has a square neck & a FULL, gathered skirt which is great for swishing & twirling. Love it!
monkeysocks on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love vintage patterns-I’m developing quite an addiction (not that you should view this as an opportunity for an intervention!)As an hourglass, I find modern clothes never fit, and I always have to take them in at the waist, whereas with vintage I always have to take them out (until I get a girdle any ways!) but the clothes are designed to look nice as an hourglass, rather than straight up and down! And the details on them – beautiful!
Though I love the pattern, the wider parts of my frame need a b38 so I’d prefer the voucher. The fabric is AMAZING!
Trisha on May 20, 2015 12:23
LOVE the fabric choice with this pattern! I’ve picked up a couple of vintage patterns, but I haven’t made one yet. Maybe this could be my first! The drawings on the pattern always look so glamorous.
B @ Sweet Limes on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love vintage but why? Oh, who knows what lies deep down there, but the class and beauty are unmatchable by anything today that’s for sure. Love the pattern you chose to give away, I’d love to make it my first sewing project that is vintage so please please pick me!
B @ Sweet Limes on May 20, 2015 12:23
So, I follow via my google reader, does that count in your books? Hope so since that’s the only way I can follow anyone.
Jennifer Churchill on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love the style of old vintage patterns that modern wear is often times lacking. I have never sewn a vintage pattern though I have one that I recently purchased. I love the teal blue of the fabric, so beautiful!

I’ve sewn a few things from vintage patterns and I love them!
The fit is better for me, the designs are great, and the quality of the actual patterns is too cool.

My step-mother gave me her entire drawer full of vintage patterns, many of them from the 1950’s. AN ENTIRE DRAWER! swoon Now have I actually gone about creating one of these masterpieces? Er…no, but I’m going to. I solemnly promise! As soon as I finish my 1.2 million Christmas projects. And once I win this fabulous giveaway. ;)
Jane on May 20, 2015 12:23
I’ve used a 50’s pencil skirt pattern as an 18 year old in the early 80’s, which I thought looked very sexy. I’ve still got the pattern and intend to make it up again soon. I’ve also used a 1940’s dress pattern earlier this year that went together a dream. I love the feminine styles of vintage patterns, so much nicer than modern ones.
Toria Howell on May 20, 2015 12:23
Phew, you’re right, it’s not easy to use typepad, I’ve ended up following using google and if this comment appears twice please forgive me!
This is an awesome giveaway, thank you for offering it. I love that fabric colour. If you’ll ship to Wales I’d love to be entered please.
I’ve finished sewing one vintage pattern and am in the process of sewing three more because obviously I have a masochistic streak and a short attention span and therefore can’t stick to one project. I love vintage patterns as I find they’re far more flattering and it’s like bringing a little piece of history to life.
eline on May 20, 2015 12:23
I would love to enter the giveaway! I’m a sewing newbie. I’ve sewn a couple of things already (mostly accessories and a couple of clothes), but I didn’t complete the one vintage pattern I own (and tried to put together). Sadly it wasn’t my size, I wasn’t happy about the fabric choice and so on. So I would like to give it another go and try again :-)
Kathleen on May 20, 2015 12:23
I have not sewn a vintage pattern, and this one would not work for me. But,I love the fabric, the nail polish and the lipstick! I am following you on typepad, as far as I can tell!
Linnea on May 20, 2015 12:23
Wow this is an awesome giveaway! I love vintage patterns because the idea of wearing the same thing somebody did decades ago is just… really neat to me! I’ve never made one but I certainly have a few in my archives that are begging attention.
Lisa Carver on May 20, 2015 12:23
I really like the style and cut of vintage patterns. I have not sewn one before, but I am taking garment construction classes and reading up on techniques so that I can master one of these babies in the near future.
Lois on May 20, 2015 12:23
Well, I used to sew with vintage patterns, but back then they were modern. I still had a couple, but now my daughter took them. I recently saw a vintage pattern on someone’s blog & ordered it. I really love the necklines & yokes on this pattern. After several years of ‘not sewing’ I’m back to sewing again. But I want anything I spend all that time on to be special.
Corrie on May 20, 2015 12:23
Lovely! I love the color of the wool. :D
I am a terrible Vintage pattern addict. I collect them from yard sales, thrift stores, anywhere I see them at a good price. I absolutely love the femininity of the dresses in the 40’s, 50’s & 60’s.
As to whether I have ever sewed one or not — No. I have sewn a dress from a vintage reproduction, but haven’t yet used any of my precious vintage patterns. I do like dreaming when I look at them though.
khristie barratt on May 20, 2015 12:23
I love Vintage patterns, because they ooze glamour and style. And a girl can only wish… I mostly use vintage patterns, I’m working on a fab vogue frock(6478) for the summer.
Sharon L. on May 20, 2015 12:23
I’ve only sewn a Vogue repro – not a true vintage (actually, I guess I have sewn a vintage pattern – before they were vintage). My favorite era is the ’40s. Just love the clean, sleek lines of the vintage patterns.
Belinda on May 20, 2015 12:23
Wow, what is there not to like about Vintage patterns?! I love that they are a way to step back in time and wear the sweet, sassy and sexy clothing from the past. It is especially exciting to be able to replicate clothing seen in old movies and new retro inspired shows like Mad Men.
Love your blog and great giveaway!
Heather on May 20, 2015 12:23
Hi, what a great giveaway! I LOVE that fabric. I love vintage patterns because of their classic styles, and I love the envelope illustrations for hairstyle, jewelry and shoe ideas too. I’ve made a few vintage dresses and have a collection of over 100 patterns. They were surprisingly easy to make and fit so wonderfully thanks to all the darts they contain.

Oh wow what a prize! I am very very new to this sewing biz – I only just bought my first machine and I have to re-learn how to sew. I only dabbled as a kid but my teacher deemed me skilled enough at 12 to single me out to make a more complicated project than everyone else in the class.
So now I have my machine and I am awaiting the arrival of my very first vintage pattern from Etsy. It’s a button up pencil skirt which I hope won’t prove to be too difficult.
I need to get the hang of my machine too and take it in for a service.
So excited about making my own clothes! This prize would be another perfect way to get started!

I’ve only made one vintage pattern – a 1965 dress. it was humungous. but with a bit of bringing in on the sides it became more fitted. I’ve done a few re-issues though. I’d love to tackle this dress in the 32 bust !

Hello! This is an awesome giveaway! I am now following you via Facebook connect.
I like vintage patterns because I feel they have style that the newer patterns I often see are lacking. Now that I sew more and read more about sewing, I know there are new patterns that are pretty and stylish, but there are a lot by the big pattern companies that are also just blah. Back when women sewed more, there was more available to the home seamstress, and women wanted classy, current garment options. To me, many of these are still classy and stylish, but I am a lover of lots of vintage things anyway. And yes, I have sewed with vintage patterns. I have not yet tried an unprinted one though. Thanks for hosting a great giveaway, and please enter me twice!
Renay on May 20, 2015 12:23
p.s. I love sewing from vintage patterns, my favourite being 50’s styles. I have just finished a candy pink dress over at my blog. thanks again :-)
Syrena B on May 20, 2015 12:23
Vintage fashions are so flattering to the female figure! I have several vintage patterns from the 60’s & 70’s but really want more styles from the 30’, 40’s, & 50’s… I have only sewn one vintage pattern and as long as you can follow directions, they are not any worse than the newer patterns. Vintage patterns are hard to find at decent prices (I’m on a tight budget) so winning this one would be fantastic!!
Patty on May 20, 2015 12:23
I haven’t yet sewn a vintage pattern, but the more I see, the more I like! This one is a beauty and one I would like to try :-)
Amy on May 20, 2015 12:23
I don’t think I’ve ever made a dress off a truly vintage pattern. Vintage styles, yes. Even antiquated, perhaps. But my learning to sew lately has taken the turn towards costuming a steampunk band, so antiquated works for me.
Greta on May 20, 2015 12:23
I have sewn only a couple of vintage patterns, for my daughter. It seems they are so flattering to the female form, and they assume that you have quality (natural-fiber) materials, not stuff like “fleece” (ugh), etc.
